Kingdom of Lan’an
Overview
A moderately-sized country established a long time ago, with a coast at southeast of the land and no countries along the eastern and southern borders. The Kingdom of Lan’an annexed Sei’an, a country on their western border, about 20 years prior to canon events when Sei’an was in dire economical strife, and posed as their “saviours”. They are currently in the early stages of war with Kita’an, a kingdom on their northern border.
The Lan’anese armed forces are much stronger than their naval forces due to their training for and during the annexation of Sei’an. In fact, this disparity in strength is the weakest link in the Lan’anese Royal Military, and will be instrumental in the downfall of the current Lan’anese regime, brought by the efforts of the Sei’anese militias and revolutionaries.During and as a result of the assimilation of the Sei’anese refugees into Lan’anese society, propaganda against the Sei’anese was spread out, both in favour and against their move to Lan’an. Recently, similar propaganda has been appearing about the Kita’anese people, though much more lacking on the positive side. Nowadays, propaganda on the Sei’anese seems positive, but leave conservative residents of Lan’an feeling as if their home has been taken over by foreigners. A big feature of this propaganda against the Sei’anese and Kita’anese is their lack of cleanliness and primitive technological advancements. Lan’anese children are thus taught from a young age to be hygienic and respectful of the spaces around them, and look down on their more “savage” counterparts.Geography
Lan’an borders two countries, Sei’an to the west, and Kita’an to the north. The eastern and southern borders are free to water, with the southern coast protected by smaller, uninhabited islands. The capital of Lan’an is located west of the centre of the land, and encompasses all the royal estates, as well as the parliamentary buildings, the Royal Military training grounds, the College of Physicians, and the Academy of Research and Technology.

Sei’an, Region of Lan’an
Overview
After the annexation by Lan’an 20 years ago, Sei’an has been governed by Lan’anese officials and guarded by Lan’anese military personnel stationed by the borders and government buildings. People who fled Sei’an around the time of the annexation were given refugee status and a chance to become naturalized citizens, though the people who moved to Lan’an hoping for a better life than what Sei’an could offer them at the moment quickly realized that they were not going to be treated as fairly as they thought they would’ve. During this 20-year period, a quiet revolution was building up underground against the Lan’anese officials in power, and this would eventually become the Sei’anese militia that overthrows the Lan’anese regime in favour of a new government.
Many refugees from Sei’an from the annexation period are thought to be spies for this militia and are “exiled” by the Lan’anese; in actuality, they are sent to a prisoner camp. There are many Sei’anese double agents within the Lan’anese military on standby, and during the hunt for these double agents within the Lan’anese military, many innocent Sei’anese refugees were killed or imprisoned, becoming martyrs for the revolutionary cause, while being scapegoated by the Lan’anese.Prior to the fall of their economy, Sei’an was a kingdom close to establishing a republic government when a series of natural disasters disrupted the handover plans and wrecked the farmland. Thus, the money allocated to the process of the handover was used to trade with neighbouring countries for food supplies and protection while their defences were down. When another natural disaster struck again, Lan’an saved Sei’an under the condition that while Sei’an was still in need of financial aid, Lan’an would rule its people for their “safety”. Unfortunately, once Sei’an returned to its original economy, Lan’an refused to let go, and took over what little was left in Sei’an’s hands.Geography
Sei’an rests on Lan’an’s western border and on Kita’an’s southern border. It is mostly landlocked, save for a short peninsula that extends southernly to create a small bay; everything to the west of that is under the control of another territory. Sei’an has a mountain range and sits close to some fault lines, and experiences infrequent but strong earthquakes and avalanches, so when they rebuilt Sei’an’s capital, they did so closer to the border they share with Lan’an and the coast.

Augustine Min'en

Legal Name: Augustine Min En
Also Known As: Augustine Mieno (birth name), August (by Lyn An’lai)
Age: 22 (debut)
Gender: Female
Birthdate: 14th of Spring, Ren’yui 532
Birthplace: Mariso, Thalma (also known as Sei’an)
Nationality: Lan’anese
Status: Naturalized Citizen
Residence: Dormitory for the College of Physicians, Citadel of Lan’an
Appearance
Augustine is a short young woman with dark brown hair and eyes. Over the years as she’s grown up, she’s gained more plump and curvature than her Lan’anese counterparts. She likes to keep herself neat to stay inconspicuous in Lan’anese society, and keeps her hair pulled back in a bun on most days.
She typically wears her physician’s uniform, other than on the days she doesn’t have to go to work, which consists of a long, dark, pleated skirt, a cream coloured blouse, and a dark blue cloak if she’s travelling. When in surgery, she dons a white apron and a headscarf to keep everything sterile. She begins to wear her hair loose by the end of the story, after she and Lyn An’lai flee the country and move to a coastal region.Personality
Due to her upbringing as a Sei’anese refugee in Lan’an, Augustine has learned to keep her head down and follow as Lan’anese custom and traditions dictate. She performs the Lan’anese model of a perfect, patriotic citizen, and keeps her residence, work area, and surroundings clean and tidy, teaches hygiene classes to the nursery children on weekends, and works for the Lan’anese military’s surgery division. She has a fear of being transferred to field work, since she’d have to get dirty during that sort of assignment.
However, when she is uninhibited— drunk, exhausted, or drugged— Augustine reveals her true personality, which is that of a clingy, lazy, and impulsive girl, who uses her heart to reason instead of her mind. She puts a lot of blind faith in the institutions and the people she trusts; for example, when Lyn tells Augustine that the military officials dealing with the Kita’anese child soldier project had bad intentions, Augustine cannot reconcile that information with the image of the Lan’anese military she holds in her mind until she sees Lyn injured from that attack, which is when she decides to try and flee the country with her.History
Augustine was brought to Lan’an by her parents when she was two years old, entering the country as Sei’anese refugees. At the time, Lan’an had a program where all Sei’anese refugee children under the age of five could apply to become naturalized citizens as long as they studied well and acted with the behaviour of a typical Lan’anese citizen, and since Augustine was eligible, her parents enrolled her into it. Since it was important to them that she was able to obtain citizenship, they raised her to see it as important as a life or death situation, and she changed herself to fit the requirements of the program. Eventually, when she was twelve years old, Augustine passed the exam to become a Lan’anese citizen.
Augustine became friends with her next door neighbour, Lyn An’lai, when they were three years old. They quickly became best friends and spent a lot of time together, especially after school when Augustine’s parents weren’t home from work yet. The An’lai family are kind, hardworking people, who took care of Augustine when her parents couldn’t, especially when they were deported back to Sei’an for violating a condition of their refugee status. Augustine, 14 years old at the time, was allowed to stay with the An’lai family until she was enrolled into the Academy of Research and Technology the following year, alongside Lyn.After their graduation from the Academy, Augustine persuaded Lyn to enlist in the Lan’anese military together, wanting to serve the country the best she could. While Lyn headed for the army division, Augustine went on to serve the surgical division, and worked diligently to get to where she is at the present.Trivia
- Due to the culture of keeping oneself clean in Lan’an, Augustine developed a habit of washing hands before and after every meal, when she gets home and before she leaves, before bed and when she wakes up, amongst the other usual times one would wash hands. This habit, combined with her job as a physician, leaves her hands dry and chapped often.
- She claims to not remember anything from her life prior to moving to Lan’an often, but she does remember bits and pieces, and feels most at peace when she’s at the beach, where she was raised those first two years of her life.
- She says her favourite flower is the national flower of Lan’an, but really just likes chamomile for their medicinal purposes.
- Her lucky number is 2, since she moved to Lan’an at that age, and also because she likes to put Lyn and herself in a pair of two.
